Bee Day – a unique initiative by Polenergia for school students at the Sulechów Photovoltaic Farm

Around 80 primary school students from local schools participated in Bee Day, organized by the Polenergia Group at the Sulechów Photovoltaic Farm in the Lubuskie Voivodeship. This event, blending education and entertainment, provided an opportunity to learn more about the invaluable role of bees in ecosystems while expanding knowledge about biodiversity and green energy. The day featured numerous activities, including workshops on entomology, renewable energy, and beekeeping. Bee Day in Sulechów is part of Polenergia's educational program Play Green with Us!®, a unique initiative designed to raise climate awareness among schoolchildren and preschoolers.

It is no coincidence that we celebrate Bee Day in Sulechów. Here, we have not only a farm producing clean solar energy but also our own 'photovoltaic' apiary on-site. It consists of 10 hives, which can host hundreds of thousands of bees in summer. Meeting with students, we aim to share knowledge about biodiversity, environmental protection, and the role of renewable energy in a captivating, practical, and engaging way. We want to be close to the residents as a good neighbor who supports the local community while caring for a better climate.

Polenergia hosted Bee Day at the Sulechów Photovoltaic Farm for the third time as part of International Bee Day celebrations. This year, 78 students and 8 teachers from schools in Cigacice, Buków, Sulechów, Kije, and Kalsk attended the event.

The program included sessions on solar energy production conducted by Polenergia project managers, a presentation on beekeeping by the farm’s beekeeper, and insect observation workshops led by an entomologist from the University of Zielona Góra.

As part of Play Green with Us!®, Polenergia collaborates with educational institutions to conduct numerous environmental activities, raising climate change awareness among students. The initiative is carried out in municipalities where Polenergia develops its photovoltaic and wind farms.

The foundation of effective education is student activity, personal experience, knowledge, skills, and the commitment of educators. When combined with positive emotions, we have a recipe for success. This is what we experience during Polenergia’s workshops. I am convinced that educational initiatives like Bee Day allow us all to feel united in understanding climate phenomena and countering environmental degradation.

Polenergia’s Sulechów Photovoltaic Farm represents renewable green energy, home to over half a million bees housed in 10 hives and a multi-hectare wildflower meadow. The biologically diverse area provides space and food for both managed and wild pollinators. Research conducted by scientists from the University of Zielona Góra has confirmed the presence of 39 species of wild bees on the farm.

In the face of biodiversity loss, investment areas such as photovoltaic farms, when properly managed, can serve as substitute habitats for many animal species. The Sulechów Photovoltaic Farms Complex is an excellent example of green space management that supports fauna. The University of Zielona Góra has been collaborating with Polenergia for three years, conducting research on fauna settlement in these areas and exploring ways to enhance green space use for environmental protection. This fruitful collaboration resulted in the publication of the book "Green Potential: Photovoltaics as a Renewable Energy Example Supporting Biodiversity," summarizing two years of research at the Sulechów Photovoltaic Farms.
