Green hydrogen factory in Upper Silesia...

Green hydrogen factory in Upper Silesia with funding of up to EUR 142.77 mln. This is the H2Silesia project, developed by Polenergia

H2Silesia, Polenergia's hydrogen project, may receive funding of up to EUR 142.77 mln for implementation. This is the result of the notification decision of the European Commission. The H2Silesia project involves the construction of a large-scale green hydrogen factory with a capacity of approximately 105 MW, which will be able to produce approximately 13,000 tons of this raw material per year. Polenergia is the only Polish company covered by the Hy2Infra program. “This is a very important message for the market and our investors. The decision of the European Commission significantly increases the value of the project”, says Iwona Sierżęga, Member of the Management Board of Polenergia S.A.

The notification decision of the European Commission was issued under the IPCEI Hy2Infra program and confirms funding of up to EUR 142.77 mln. This is the maximum level of public aid for the H2Silesia project, which is implemented by Polenergia’s hydrogen team.

Polenergia is the only Polish company that will take part in the Hy2Infra program. This is a very important message for the market and our investors. The European Commission's decision significantly increases the value of the project. Renewable hydrogen, to be produced, among others, via H2Silesia, is a natural extension of the Polenergia value chain. Hydrogen as a green energy carrier can definitely accelerate the move away from fossil fuels and the construction of a zero-emission economy. It is the fuel of the future.

The H2Silesia project envisages the construction of a large-scale green hydrogen production installation with a capacity of approximately 105 MW, which will enable the production of approximately 13,000 tons of hydrogen per year. The project implemented in Upper Silesia aims to provide renewable hydrogen for heavy industry and zero-emission transport. At the same time, it can support the energy transformation of the region related to the extraction and use of fossil fuels.

The European Commission has launched the Hy2Infra program as part of the IPCEI (Important Projects of Common European Interest) initiative. Seven Member States are participating – Poland, France, Germany, Italy, the Netherlands, Portugal, and Slovakia. The Commission expects that increasing hydrogen supplies will accelerate the implementation of the European Green Deal.

The construction of large-scale installations for the production of renewable hydrogen is a very important step in the process of decarbonization of the industry. By generating hydrogen using renewable energy sources, we integrate the energy industry with sectors for which electrification has so far been very difficult or impossible. Green hydrogen also allows to become independent from imported energy carriers. It is an additional value for customers who today face major challenges related to the energy transformation.

Emilia Makarewicz

Member of the Management Board of Polenergia H2Silesia

The Hy2Infra program, including the construction of hydrogen infrastructure, is an integral part of the European hydrogen strategy, which is intended to contribute to achieving climate neutrality by 2050. Final decisions regarding the approval of funding under the program and its amount will be made at the national level.

H2Silesia is one of several hydrogen projects implemented by the Polenergia Group as part of the implemented development strategy. The most advanced of them is H2HUB Nowa Sarzyna, located in Podkarpacie. The project located on the premises of the Nowa Sarzyna Heat and Power Plant involves the construction of an installation for the production of green hydrogen with a capacity of 5 MW.
