Polenergia: A Partner of United Nations Global Compact

Polenergia S.A. (“Polenergia”), the largest Polish private, vertically integrated energy group, joined the line-up of companies that are actively involved in sustainable development. As part of the United Nations Global Compact initiative, the company is embarking on performance of two programmes, “Equal Opportunities in Business” and “Sustainable Cities.”
  • United Nations Global Compact is the largest initiative in the world that engages companies in implementation of the UN Sustainable Development Goals;
  • Polenergia participates in two projects: “Equal Opportunities in Business” and “Sustainable Cities”;
  • Sustainable development and corporate social responsibility are the vital elements in the Development Strategy of the Polenergia Group;

In 2017, Polenergia joined the Ethics Program Standard of United Nations Global Compact Network Polska. Continuing actions aimed at efficient cooperation for the sake of sustainable development, the Group joined United Nations Global Compact in 2020. This is an initiative that brings together companies, governments and scientific institutions that create strategies and actions for ethical and sustainable business. Joint effort and engagement of numerous organisations for the sake of implementing the UN Sustainable Development Goals contributes to a global change in the standards pertaining to human rights, work, environmental protection and counteracting corruption.

Sustainable development and corporate social responsibility are the vital elements in the Development Strategy of the Polenergia Group. Actions for the sake of fair energy transformation of Poland and the region, development of clean energy based on Renewable Energy Sources, care for the future generations must respect the rights of people and the natural environment that is surrounding us.

Michał Michalski, Ph.D.

President of the Management Board of Polenergia

The UN Sustainable Development Goals designate key directions of Polenergia’s development in the area of responsible business. Among 17 goals, three are treated as priority by the Group and supported with business decisions and specific initiatives: Goal 5: Gender Equality; Goal 7: Affordable and Clean Energy and Goal 17: Partnerships. Polenergia’s engagement in the United Nations Global Compact projects is an expression of active support for responsible and sustainable corporate policy. As part of the partnership, the company embarked on implementation of two projects: “Equal Opportunities in Business” and “Sustainable Cities”.

The “Equal Opportunities in Business” programme, as part of the Ethics Standard, encompasses activities promoting leadership of women and equality in business. According to the estimates of United Nations Global Compact, if women were involved in economic life on a par with men, the world’s economy would gain USD 28 billion by 2025. Furthermore, companies which have at least one woman holding a managerial position show 44% of efficiency improvement in the scale of the year. These data clearly manifest that equality is an opportunity for business to improve the results and goals. Therefore, equal opportunities of professional development and actions aimed at equal access to education irrespective of sex are one of the key elements without which sustainable development is impossible

As the signatory of the “Diversity Charter”, we wish to actively support women in professional development and form leadership competence among women. The potential and support for diversity in Polenergia creates innovations, inspirations and ambitions that allow for implementation of our Development Strategy

Iwona Sierżęga

member of Polenergia's Management Board

The “Sustainable Cities” programme was created as a response of Global Compact Poland to the UN Sustainable Development Goals adopted in September last year. Actions taken in the “Sustainable Cities” programme refer to healthy living, clean energy, innovative infrastructure, as well as environmental protection. They accompany the meeting of goals related to the sustainable development of cities, economic growth and environmental protection with special attention given to the improvement of air quality in Poland. Polenergia, which belongs to the group of leaders on the Polish market of Renewable Energy Sources, will use its knowledge to actively support the drive to extensive application of innovative, environmentally friendly solutions in the realm of generation, trading and distribution of energy from RES.

In 2015, 193 member states of the UN unilaterally adopted the “Transforming Our World: the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development” resolution, which features 17 Sustainable Development Goals and 169 detailed tasks related to them. The goals and tasks associated with them are interdependent and indivisible and they ensure a balance between the three aspects of sustainable development: economic, social and environmental.
